Land Conservation Toolkit
Resource Guide
The Bull Run Mountains in Northern Virginia, a region prized for its natural beauty and proximity to Washington, D.C., serves as both a living laboratory and an open-air museum. This area faces increasing pressure from rapid urban expansion. The Bull Run Mountains Conservancy (BRMC), an independent non-profit, champions the preservation of this unique area through education, research, and stewardship. To further these efforts, BRMC partnered with the Institute for Integrative Conservation at William & Mary in the fall of 2022 to explore Nature-Based Solutions, specifically the potential of carbon markets to incentivize conservation-focused land management. This research project aims to determine the viability of integrating the carbon market as a land management strategy by quantifying carbon storage within the region and understanding the values local landowners place on their property. As part of this work, student researchers have developed a toolkit to help landowners understand various conservation strategies. This toolkit will walk landowners through the basic steps and provide helpful insight into the various approaches an individual can take to help preserve the Bull Run Mountain Region.
